Students of PKU bear the palm in the international landscape designing contest

Peking University, Beijing, June.8th Zhang Lei ,Guo Lingyun, Song Ge, students respectively came from Environment Department of PKU, Academe of Landscape Designing and Shenzhen graduate institute won the second prize(IFLA Zvi Miler Prize) in the IFLA-UNESCO international landscape designing contest which was sponsored by International Federation of Landscape Architects（IFLA）and United Nations Educational, Scientific and cultural Organization(NUNESCO).This was the first time that students of PKU took part in the contest and the achievement was splendid.
Students specialized in landscape designing , project or architecture field all over the world were welcome to the contest. The Landscape Institute of United Kingdom undertook the current contest. The theme of the contest this year was “safer cities and towns” and there were one first prize (IFLA-UNESCO Prize for Landscape Architecture),one second prize(IFLA Zvi Miler Prize)and some excellence prize waiting for the contestants.
With the name Qimu-Safe Community Shared by Both Locals and Hobos, PKU’s scheme chose Liulang Village which was located between the Summer Palace and Zhongguancun for researching. Through research on the historical literature and social investigations in this area, the findings on the cultural connection between Liulang Village and the royalty family of Qing Dynasty , and the analysis of the process of its transformation, our contestants focused on the protection of cultural heritages and the rapid turn-to-city trend which modern high-tech gardens brought to the village, with the two factors, the group found the sticking point that made the material , cultural and security status of this area worse and worse, and tried to find a path ,more human and more harmonious, for the development henceforth. As the social cultural network of Liulang Village was withering away, the scheme suggested a plan which took 3 steps to reconstruct the social network, first, the reconstruction of city environment, then, renaissance of local cultural network, and the last step, construction of resident area for hoboes. Though the whole procedure,we were hoping a stable social network could be built, so that Liulang Village could pass the transitional period safely and harmoniously. Also the scheme might provide a possibility for those edge zones of cities dealing with problems caused by the turn-to-city trend.
In 1997,Yu Kongjian,first Harvard PhD specialized in Designing was introduced into PKU ,and then,the subject of Landscape Designing developed rapidly here. In 2003,the foundation of Academe of Landscape Designing was approved, this year Degree Committee of State Department authorized master’s degree on Landscape Designing and 30-50 graduate students will be recruited to Shenzhen graduate institute as planned next year.
Landscape Designing is an applied subject combining science and art, it deals with outdoor space matters, for instance, outer environment of architectures, city’s outdoor space, landscape of the community even the land programming of the whole country. The goal of the subject is harmonizing the tension between human and land caused by the overspread of the city.
