First Yuanpei Experimental Class Graduated This Year

Peking University, Beijing, Jun. 16th, 2005: 81 special students among this year’s graduates are under focus of the public attention. They are graduates from the first Yuanpei Experimental Class of PKU. As the first group of students for the reforming experiment of PKU educational system for undergraduates, they successfully completed their four years of life in Yan Yuan.
According to the introduction of Professor Zhu Qingzhi, one of the teachers in charge, the students are basically satisfactory about their studies and they showed higher comprehensive qualities and broad knowledge background when they graduated. Among these 81 students, 20 have applied for studying abroad and 18 of them have gained financial support. 29 students will pursue further studies within our country, and other students who look for jobs have found good opportunities. Apart from that, there are 8 students who will postpone their graduation time due to the flexible educational time of 3 to 6 years.
In 1999, PKU established “Research Group for Development and Reform of Undergraduate Education” to investigate the situations and problems of the current educational system for undergraduates. The members are some senior teachers both home and abroad directly appointed by the President of PKU. They found that it is not reasonable for Chinese universities to decide the students’ majors immediately after their entrance. They do not have a clear idea of their majors. In most cases, it is their parents who decide their majors for them. This results in the fact that the students are not studying what they are interested in. It is an obstacle for cultivating innovative talents, and is not following the practice of the international community. The Yuanpei Project which began in September 2001 was a solution to this problem. Mr. Zhu confirmed that the name of this project corresponds to the “all-inclusive” educational idea Mr. Cai Yuanpei.
Different from other departments, Yuanpei Experimental Class emphasized on the overall development of the basic knowledge, the abilities and the qualities of the students. According to the guideline of this project “strengthening basic knowledge, weakening the idea of major, teaching students in accordance with their aptitude and cultivating students in a divided form”, new modes of education were adopted such as the credit system, the system of choosing majors freely, the tutor system and the system of flexible educational time. This first Yuanpei Experimental Class had its education of basic knowledge in the first one and a half years. They could choose freely what they want to learn from the basic courses according to their interests and abilities. At the end of the second semester, they would apply for their majors and make a decision in the third semester. Then they would choose courses in related departments and study both the major curricular courses and extracurricular courses required.
The Yuanpei Project has been practiced for 4 sessions, and many other domestic universities benefit a lot from its experiences.
